Tour Description

Nestled in the heart of the Tasmanian bush, the Overland Track has become world famous due to its stunning views, unique ora and intriguing history. This 6 day, 65km expedition begins at Cradle Mountain and ends at the picturesque Lake St Clair.

The Overland track is situated in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. It meanders through a variety of terrain, from sheer mountains, temperate rainforest, wild rivers to alpine plains. World-renowned for its pristine environment and beautiful scenery, this walk is listed by Lonely Planet as one of the best in the world!

We’ve teamed up with local experts On Track Expeditions and carefully crafted a 6 day unique OTBT adventure completely immersed in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.

Leaving from Cradle Mountain National Park, we walk on average 4-6 hours a day through pristine forest and national park. Parts of the track has boardwalk to help with the preservation of this amazing heritage area.

Each day on the track will involve numerous incline and decline sections which makes this expedition challenging but achievable for all. Whilst walking, our guides will inform you of several optional side excursions, including to the summits of Cradle Mountain and Mount Ossa, the tallest mountain in Tasmania. Upon reaching the end of this adventure, you will be transported by small ferry over Lake St Clair – the deepest lake in Australia.

Off The Beaten Track WA provides trained and experienced Guides for our Hiking Experiences & Adventure Tours. We carry two-way communication devices, a personal location beacon when phone signal is not available and we’re a fully licensed, insured and accredited Western Australian tourism business providing hiking and adventure experiences with a twist!

Marshlands Overland Track

Day 1

Welcome to Tasmania! You will be met at the airport and transported to a hotel before a group brie‑ng and dinner. This will be a great chance to meet your guide and do a gear check before learning all about what the next week has in store for you!

Day 2

Ronny Creek – Waterfall Valley

An early start today as we get a bus from Launceston to Cradle Mountain to start the track. On arrival, we will check into the National Park and get our trekking permits before setting off on the walk.

Our Overland Track expedition kicks off from Ronny Creek!

You will enjoy sweeping views across the glacial landscape as you walk beside the base of Cradle Mountain, before steadily descending into spectacular Waterfall Valley to the huts and campsites.

Once there, feel proud that you’ve just completed what many regard as the most difficult day of your Overland journey!

Day 3

Waterfall Valley – Lake Windermere

Day 2 of our Overland Track journey is a nice gentle stroll compared with day 1 – but still above 1000 metres in elevation!

You will enjoy hiking across the vast button grass plains where ancient pencil pines fringe alpine tarns.

Today’s high point along the track offers spectacular views across to the central mountains and down towards Lake Windermere. Windermere Hut is just beyond the lake, at the edge of a myrtle forest.

We’ll pitch our tents on the Tent platforms are located either side of the hut, amongst gnarly snow peppermints and graceful pandanis, with Lake Windermere visible in the distance. Enjoy a refreshing mountain lake swim on arrival.

Day 4

Lake Windermere – Pelion Hut

Today will be your longest day walking but it is a beauty! We begin by striding out across the heathland and moorlands. You’ll pass through Pine Forest Moor before crossing Pelion Creek, then enter a glorious myrtle-beech rainforest on the eastern banks of Mt Pelion West.

We’ll admire the rugged Mt Oakleigh as we hike through the National Park. A rest at Frog Flats near Forth River is timely before we make our way through eucalypt forest to our spacious camp at Pelion Hut.

Day 3 is certainly a cracker and one that our OTBT hikers will remember forever!

Day 5

Pelion Hut – Kia Ora

Day 4 of the Overland Track is mountain day! You’ll start your walk at the same altitude as you finish, with Pelion Hut and Kia Ora Hut both at 850m in elevation. In between, however, you’ll climb almost 300m to Pelion Gap.

We’ll spend the morning ascending thro0ugh stunning mixed forest and walking past babbling brooks. After we summit the highest peak in Tassie – Mt Ossa we’ll continue on through buttongrass boardwalks through to Kia Ora hut – my personal favourite on the trail!

The gradual descent from Pelion Gap to Kia Ora Hut through beautiful Pinestone Valley with views to your left of Cathedral Mountain, is one of my favourite parts of the whole Overland Track!

Day 6

Kia Ora Hut – Windy Ridge

Day 5 on the Overland Track is rich in history of early conservationists, bush characters and highland trappers that were instrumental in shaping the National Park.

Initially the track passes through buttongrass, but soon you’ll be immersed in beautiful rainforest and experiencing two of the best waterfalls on the Overland Track, D’Alton & Fergusson Falls!

Windy Ridge and Bert Nichols Hut is a stunning location almost totally encircled by the spectacular Du Cane Range.

Tonight is our last night on the track and it is sure to be spent with mixed emotions!

Day 7

Windy Ridge – Lake St Claire to Launceston

The views from Windy Ridge are simply breathtaking. We’ll soak in this stunning location before we hit the trail for our last day of hiking on the Overland Track!

Today is a gentle walk down the glacier’s path to Narcissus Hut beside Lake St Clair. Crossing the Narcissus River is exciting, it’s the only suspension bridge on the Overland Track and a sign your hiking expedition is coming to a close.

A little further on, you’ll see the small and rustic Narcissus Hut on the banks of the Narcissus River. We catch the ferry down Lake St Clair, the deepest lake in Australia, before we are picked up and taken back to Launceston for a hot shower and celebratory dinner!

Tonight we celebrate and relish in that sense of achievement!

Day 8
