At Off The Beaten Track WA (OTBT), we believe our greatest adventure partner is the land itself. That’s why we tread lightly, respect deeply, and act responsibly — ensuring the stunning trails, forests, and wildlife we enjoy today, remain vibrant and accessible for generations to come.
Our sustainability philosophy is simple: leave it better than we found it.
We practise and teach the internationally recognised Leave No Trace principles on all our hikes:
Staying on designated trails to protect fragile ecosystems.
Packing out all waste (including what others may leave behind).
Educating our hikers about respecting wildlife and plants.
Keeping groups small to minimise environmental impact.
You won’t just see us picking up rubbish — you’ll see us inspiring others to do the same.
We’re constantly looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint:
Offering carpool options and shared transport for hikes through our OTBT Connect group.
Prioritising local suppliers and seasonal produce for our gourmet experiences.
Use silicone based cups and bags to store and serve our snacks on our hikes, reducing plastic waste.
Advocating for walking and human-powered exploration — the ultimate zero-emission activity!
Our guides aren’t just hikers — they’re caretakers of the trails:
Participating in tree planting with local conservation groups.
Reporting trail damage, illegal dumping, and erosion to land managers.
Supporting and partnering with organisations dedicated to bushland and wildlife conservation.
Avoiding overused or degraded areas to allow them time to recover.
Over the years, OTBT has:
Removed hundreds of kilograms of litter from WA trails
Educated thousands of hikers on sustainable hiking practices like Leave No Trace
Contributed to reforestation projects and bush care initiatives
Launched an educational Wildlife tour with part proceeds going directly to wildlife conservation
Replaced single use plastics with sustainable options on all tours
Created experiences with pick up options to reduce vehicle emissions
Introduce Work From Home for the Administration & Marketing Team
Utilise online meetings to reduce emissions
Implemented Containers for Change recycling for multi-day tours, with proceeds donated to conservation charities
Measured our emissions, and created an action plan for the future
Advocated for accessibility and sustainability — proving everyone can enjoy nature without harming it
We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, but sustainability isn’t a destination — it’s an ongoing journey.
We invite every hiker to join us in protecting our precious places.
Every step counts. When you hike with us, you’re already making a difference — but you can go further:
✔ Carpool to your tour.
✔ Bring a reusable water bottle and containers.
✔ Follow our guides’ lead and Leave No Trace.
✔ Spread the word about responsible hiking.
Together, we ensure the forests keep whispering, the lakes keep shimmering, and the trails keep winding into the wild.
