Day 1 – Travel from Perth + Hike Walpole to Hilltop Lookout 8km

After the drive south to Walpole, we’ll begin our adventure with a gentle introduction – carrying only a day pack today! Leaving the township behind, the Track follows a peaceful route towards Nornalup Inlet and past Coalmine Beach, winding through coastal scrub and peppermint trees. Crossing the highway the character of the walk changes dramatically as the trail begins its steady climb into the towering karri and red tingle forest that defines this region. The ascent is gradual, allowing us to settle into the rhythm of the Track while taking in the immense scale of the tree in the cool, shaded forest.

After lunch on the Track, we’ll reach Hilltop Lookout – a spectacular reward for the climb, with sweeping views across the forest canopy, Nornalup Inlet and the distant Southern Ocean beyond. From here, a short transfer will take us to our accommodation, where we can settle in before enjoying dinner together in Walpole.

Day 2 – Hike Hilltop Lookout to Frankland River Campsite 11km

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll be transferred back to Hilltop Lookout, where we’ll shoulder our overnight packs. From here, the trail quickly draws us deeper into the Walpole Wilderness. A highlight of the day is the magnificent Giant Tingle Tree – a huge hollow red tingle that gives a remarkable insight into the age, resilience and incredible scale of these ancient forests.

From here, the Track descends gradually. The walking is peaceful and immersive, with filtered light, lush understorey and the sounds of the forest accompanying us along the way. As we approach the Frankland River, the landscape opens slightly before revealing one of the most beautiful campsite settings on the southern section of the Track. Nestled beside the tranquil waters of the river and surrounded by tall forest, it is the perfect place to finish our first full day carrying packs.

At camp, the evening begins – pitching tents, preparing dinner together, sharing stories over a hot chocolate, and settling into our cosy sleeping bags for our first night on the Track.

Day 3 – Hike Frankland River to Giants Campsite 14.5km

Leaving the river behind, the Track climbs gradually through increasingly impressive forest, where Karri, Red Tingle and Yellow Tingle trees continue to dominate the landscape. This is classic southern Bibbulmun terrain: long forest corridors, soft light, and a steady rhythm of ascent and descent. Occasional clearings offer us brief outlooks across the canopy before the trail returns to enclosed forest. This is the heart of the Walpole Nornalup Nationl Park and as we approach the famed Valley of the Giants the ancient trunks and deep green understorey create a strong sense of place.

Arriving at The Valley of The Giants we will have an opportunity to tour the Tree Top Walk (optional, additional $21), and swap the valley floor for wandering through the tree canopy (pack-free!) for a while – suspended effortlessly in the air, the walk moves gently just like the sway of the trees. You may also wish to explore the ground level 500m Ancient Empire walk, or visit the Gift Shop.

About 2kms further on we reach the Giants Campsite, which sits surrounded by these same tall trees, our serene home for tonight.

Day 4 – Hike Giants to Rame Head Campsite 16.7km

Today our hike starts amongst the towering trees, then climbs up and over the forest ridge and crosses the highway, and then our terrain changes. We continue on through a more mixed woodland and heath, surrounded by flowering gums, kingias, banksias, wildflowers and occasionally getting glimpses of the ocean. Get ready for some FUNdulations!

As the coast draws nearer, the Southern Ocean begins to influence the landscape through wind and changing terrain. The transition becomes fully apparent at Conspicuous Cliffs, where rugged coastline, limestone cliffs and open water dominate our view. From here, the route continues along coastal heath, and with the ocean never far away, we hike up towards Rame Head Campsite, our coastal location for tonight’s rest and recovery, and our last night on track.

Day 5 – Hike Rame Head to Peaceful Bay Caravan Park 12.8km + Transfer to Walpole

On our final day of hiking (for this adventure!) we follow the coastline. Shaped by wind and ocean, the Track winds across the headlands, heath and sandy sections with frequent Great Southern Ocean vistas. Before we know it, we’ll be walking into Peaceful Bay with it’s calmer waters and sheltered shoreline, signalling the end of our five day hike! 63kms of one of the most stunning sections of the Bibbulmun conquered and loved!

We will have a chance to enjoy some famous fish and chips (pending the fish & chip shop being open post Winter break as scheduled), before being transferred back to our Walpole accommodation. After a hot shower, we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner at the local pub/bistro and celebrate our adventure together! Congratulations!
